We are a non-profit 501(c) (3) animal rescue, serving North East Alabama and North West Georgia.

Summit's Sanctuary was founded in honor of a very special dog named Summit, whose life was dedicated to helping others.

In 2005, at just eight weeks old, Summit, a beautiful white Labrador Retriever, began accompanying his owner, Lisa Chandler, to Cave Spring Elementary School, where she taught. What started as a puppy visiting the classroom quickly became something much greater. Summit formed meaningful connections with countless students, particularly those facing emotional and personal challenges. For many children, Summit was a trusted friend, a source of comfort, and a reason to smile.

Over the years, Summit became an integral part of the school community. He was so beloved that the principal often introduced him as one of the school's employees. His calm presence, gentle spirit, and unwavering compassion touched the lives of students, teachers, and families alike. Summit was more than a dog—he was an educator, a counselor, and a healing presence whose impact reached far beyond the classroom.

Summit was a certified therapy dog through Bright & Beautiful Therapy Dogs and earned the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen Award. Throughout his life, he faithfully fulfilled his purpose: helping people.

In 2017, after nearly twelve years of service to the children he loved, Summit was no longer permitted to come to the school. The loss of his daily interactions with the students was heartbreaking for both Summit and Lisa. Soon afterward, Summit's health began to decline, and later that year, he crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

Although Summit's life had come to an end, his legacy of compassion and service would continue.

Inspired by Summit's unwavering devotion to others, Lisa Chandler set out to create an organization that would honor his memory by helping animals in need. She envisioned a rescue dedicated to serving the loyal companions who give so much of themselves to the people they love.

Today, Summit's Sanctuary carries forward Summit's legacy by rescuing, rehabilitating, and advocating for animals in need. Every animal welcomed into the sanctuary is treated with the same compassion, dignity, and unconditional love that Summit shared throughout his life.

His mission was helping others. His legacy lives on through every life saved.
